ToggleLESSON 1 – CONSISTENCY
The Pandemic caused an unavoidable ripple in the music industry making success as an artist more difficult than ever. At least it seemed unavoidable. Some artists countered this with creativity – diving head first into a beat or song-a-day challenge. A lucky handful didn’t have to work nearly as hard. This was because of their consistency before the pandemic.
Cashmere taught us that everything you put out should be high quality and done with consistency. If you look at his lineup of music videos you can see that he lives by that rule. So feel free to put out what you want but the higher and more consistent your work the bigger the impact.
LESSON 2 – BUILD A STRONG TEAM
A pandemic may not always be the problem. Also succeeding in the music industry isn’t the same as succeeding as an artist/musician.
For many musicians, the music industry is a daunting worldwide competition on streaming platforms but that isn’t necessarily the case. Some artists become music teachers that make more money than they ever would pursuing a stage career while others build a team, like Cashmere, setting them up for a successful run.
“Music is like a team sport.”
The list of people on an artist’s team can be long but all you really need to start is a good manager. Find yourself a partner that wants to master the business side of music so you can focus on the music itself.
LESSON 3 – HACK THE FAMILIARITY RULE
This is a hack every artist should master and is often the determining factor between an artist’s success and failure.
The Familiarity Rule – listeners like songs that sound similar to popular mainstream music, no surprises.
That isn’t to say making original soundscapes isn’t invited and encouraged but using a popular song as a sample has its perks as well as its costs.
